LET'S PRACTICE: THE FIRM

The FIRM is a subversive architectural practice that hopes to provide all people with the tools to create proactive and provocative architecture and art in their respective urban spaces. The FIRM is a fluid practice, in both members and activity, functioning as a guide and example that people can follow. The FIRM continues the lineage of past activism: Gordon Matta-Clark, Chris Burden, the Black Panthers, and more.

As part of MOCA Geffen's Practice Exhibition, the FIRM occupies the location of Chris Burden's "Exposing the Foundations of the Museum." Through a similar method of excavation, the FIRM creates a backdoor into the MOCA allowing people to bypass the rules of the MOCA and diminish the institution's authority. In order to reject the institution the practice resides in, the FIRM was built with a graphic representational facade. From within the MOCA, the practice appears as a life size representation of practice, but within the walls, the practice functions as a secret firm. By doing so, the FIRM denies the MOCA its full participation

The main function of the FIRM is to disseminate knowledge that aids in driving urban change. The main production is intervention instructions, templates that provide information on how to perform a variety of urban interventions such as opening walls, elevating people, and more. Taking advantage of the digital era, the FIRM maintains a digital catalog and archive of all interventions and instructions, providing people with a consistent and readily available source of knowledge.
