MONOLITH MUSEUM

Located on the corner of Mateo and 7th Street in the Los Angeles Arts District, the Monolith Museum for Architecture performs as a naturally changing architectural exhibition for the neighborhood through the use of rusting Cor-Ten steel.  The museum seeks to be a part of the Arts District urban fabric, pulling material decisions from its context in order to not alienate the neighborhood.

The monolithic exhibition space rests upon a concrete landscape that serves the community as an entirely public program.  With spaces for classrooms, lectures, a bookstore, a cafe, and plenty of seating, the landscape encourages community use.

The exhibition space is supported by occupiable pratt trusses that create spaces for architectural models and installations.  The facade is created with Cor-Ten panels at various angles and perforation to allow day lighting with some mediation.
